Sesshoumaru is the older half-brother of the title character, InuYasha. He appears to be cold and emotionless, but we all know that's not true! He possesses a sword given to him by his father, called the Tenseiga, which can revive a hundred demons in one swing, though he covets the sword InuYasha owns, the Tetsusaiga.

After deciding that the Tenseiga was useless, Sesshoumaru gets Kaijinbou to make him a sword from the fangs of a demon called Goshinki, which is aptly named Toukijin. Before this, however, we see Sesshoumaru finding use for his inheritance when he comes across a young child called Rin.

The most well known member of Sesshoumaru's family is the hanyou, InuYasha, who was the son of the late Inu No Tashio and a human Princess named Izayoi. He travels around Japan searching for the Shikon Jewel shards, and is not kindly looked upon by Sesshoumaru. Mostly because he is a hanyou, with 'human blood', but I think it might be because it shows Sesshoumaru's father's 'betrayal'.

Sesshoumaru's father's name is not known, but he is called 'Touga/InuTashio/Inu No Tashio' by many fans. He is a full dog demon, the same as Sesshoumaru, but he fell in a fight to protect the human woman that had bore him a son, Izayoi. His last words to his eldest son are those that seem to haunt the demon through most of the third movie: "Do you have someone to protect?" It was Touga who gave his fangs to create the two swords Tessaiga and Tenseiga, but he also used a third sword, Sou'unga.

Sesshoumaru's 'stepmother' is a woman that was introduced early on in the InuYasha series, when Sesshoumaru tried to claim Tessaige. Her name is Izayoi and she was impregnated by Sesshoumaru and InuYasha's father about one hundred years before the 'fuedal era' time that InuYasha travels around with Kagome. She is a princess, and a man who loved her murdered her just after the birth of her hanyou son in jealously. Touga brought her back to life with Tenseiga, but died for her, leaving the princess to raise a hated hanyou alone.

Sesshoumaru's true mother has recently been introduced in the manga. She has not been given a name as of yet, but is fondly named Fluffette or InuKimi (Dog Princess/Lady). She has many strong powers, as did the late Inu Tashio, among such being that of restoring life. She has many of the same attributes of Sesshoumaru, although she seems to be a bit more light-hearted and playful. Like Sesshomaru, she thinks little of human life, and, upon seeing Rin and Kohaku tagging along after her son, she casually asks if he's planning to devour them. We also see that Sesshoumaru got his crescent moon from his mother as well as the magenta stripes (poison markings).
